What You Can Expect at a Wellness Exam
A wellness exam is about so much more than a superficial check-up; it’s a comprehensive evaluation of your current health status and a forecast for your future well-being.
The process begins with vital signs. We measure your blood pressure, heart rate, weight, height, and BMI. These metrics provide us with a snapshot of your immediate health within minutes. Next comes a full head-to-toe physical. Our clinicians examine your heart, lungs, stomach, skin, joints, and reflexes, ensuring every bodily system receives attention. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how extensive the visit is; they often underestimate the time required.
This physical examination, however, is merely the foundation. The clinician then engages you in a detailed interview. We ask about sleep quality, new pains or discomforts, and family medical history regarding diabetes or heart disease. We also verify if you are current on age-appropriate cancer screenings and other preventive tests. These inquiries are just as vital as the hands-on assessment because they enable us to detect issues before symptoms manifest.
- Vital Signs & Measurements: Complete check of blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight, and BMI.
- Medical & Medication Review: In-depth discussion of your medical history, family risks, and active prescriptions.
- Targeted Screenings & Labs: Implementation of age-specific screening tests and lab work when indicated.
- Actionable Lifestyle Guidance: Practical recommendations on nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and habits.
- Immunization & Vaccine Check: Assessment of your vaccination status with updates provided on-site if necessary.
Especially for our patients in Tampa Heights and Seminole Heights, who may contend with older housing infrastructure and occupations involving physical labor, we give heightened scrutiny to joint health, lung function, and the impact of the humidity on blood pressure. We also take into account the impact of Tampa’s hot, humid summers on your overall health.
At our center, APRN Orlando Cruz brings over 30 years of clinical and hands-on medical experience to each session. We take the time to put the pieces together, interpreting lab results and physical indicators and relating them to your lifestyle and daily activities. Often a patient may present as feeling fine but will be told through a routine blood test that he or she has high cholesterol or may be on the way to type 2 diabetes. This is the whole idea: to discover issues before you do.
So no, a wellness exam is more than “having your blood pressure taken.” It is a substantive conversation that is supported by clinical care.

The Difference Between a Medicare Wellness Visit and an Annual Exam
You don’t always need lab work. That’s the plain truth. If you twisted your ankle or need a wart removed, lab tests won’t offer much insight. There are, however, moments when lab testing is exactly what stands between guessing and knowing. We see this every week at our clinic on W Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. Someone comes in feeling “off” for weeks—tired all the time, gaining weight for no clear reason, or experiencing persistent dizzy spells. By the time they visit us, they are seeking clear answers. That’s when lab work proves its value.
- You're starting a new weight management plan or GLP-1 program and need baseline metabolic numbers.
- Your annual wellness check-up is due, and you haven't had lab work in over a year.
- You're dealing with ongoing fatigue, brain fog, or unexplained symptoms your previous doctor couldn't identify.
- A pre-employment physical requires specific screening panels for your new job.
If your only symptom started yesterday, and it’s a sore throat or mild cough, lab testing is likely not the initial step. We prefer to treat what’s obvious and save you the needle stick. There is no benefit to running tests you don’t need.
Patients from Tampa Heights and Seminole Heights often tell us they put off lab testing because past clinics made it seem complicated or time-consuming with long waits, confusing paperwork, and delayed results. APRN Orlando Cruz, with over 30 years of clinical experience, personally reviews every result and explains what the numbers mean to you. We don’t simply hand you a printout on your way out. If something has been concerning you, lab testing gives you a clear picture to build a personalized care plan together.

Wellness Exams Tailored to Tampa Neighborhoods
Different communities in Tampa have different demographics and social determinants of health. And this has an important impact on the kinds of questions we ask and what kind of screenings you need as part of a wellness exam.
In Seminole Heights and Tampa Heights, we have patients who live in housing that was built before the 1970s. There is aging infrastructure in these areas and their health needs in wellness exams may center around environmental exposure issues. Lead paint in the older housing stock, mold resulting from Florida’s extreme humidity levels, seasonal allergies that are quite prevalent between March and May. We ask these questions because we are familiar with that area, and it is the right kind of screening for those particular patients. In West Tampa, or in Carver City-Lincoln Gardens, many of our patients are working family members with shifts, and the clinic on W Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd needs to be a place that offers basic preventive care. Without having to jump through hoops to get care. That’s what we created.
Some people that move in from the Hyde Park neighborhood, or from Davis Islands, typically want to transition to us from their current primary care provider and have the questions of making sure that nothing slips through the cracks. Most of the time, though, it’s about “Am I healthy or just feeling fine?” And wellness exams are a great opportunity to answer that question.
You can look at Tampa’s weather and the heat and humidity, and there are patterns that we are able to identify every year. The change in blood pressure due to dehydration, for example, comes back in labs constantly between June and September. We see patients who are indoors all day long when it’s cooler, with air conditioning running, and their Vitamin D levels are often low, too. Due to Tampa’s subtropical climate, our patients also suffer from respiratory and allergy problems not experienced in most Northern cities.
Because we are a Spanish-speaking clinic, our patients are representative of the communities we serve. APRN Orlando Cruz brings over 30 years of international clinical and hands-on medical experience to every visit, so there will be no barriers for the patient, not even a language barrier. Understanding the lab work as well as daily life.
We know that where you live can be a risk factor for your healthcare. And it is our mission to ensure you have a wellness exam that reflects where you live.

What If I Don't Need a Wellness Exam?
There are times when a client calls and wants a wellness exam, but we feel it’s unnecessary. That’s fine. Let’s discuss it so you know what’s going on today.
Example: you have a fever or a strong cough. You don’t need a wellness exam, that’s a sick visit. You don’t need a wellness exam for when you feel well and don’t know why you are in good health. This is an appointment that is often booked. There are many clients who think a wellness exam is what they need, when it’s just a general check up. This is one of the most common reasons to call us, maybe even three or four times every week at our clinic on W Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.
Example: You have played a game of pick-up basketball at a park in Seminole Heights and then you’ve been hurt or injured. You will need to have a minor treatment visit for this. A wellness exam can not take the place of a minor injury.
Same thing if you have chest pains, if you have trouble breathing, if something is causing discomfort, you need to get checked right away. You wouldn’t want a general wellness exam in the place of a visit for those specific symptoms.
And if you are applying for a job or have to provide proof you are healthy to work, you will need a pre-employment physical exam. We do offer pre-employment physical exams, but those exams are different than a wellness exam.
What then would you use a wellness exam for? If you’re in good health, haven’t had a visit in quite some time, you could get a general wellness visit, especially with the labs and check-ups like cholesterol and blood sugar. This is just to keep you on top of things.
The important point is, if you’re not sure which visit is best, give us a call and we’ll help you. APRN Orlando Cruz brings over 30 years of clinical experience to every conversation, even the ones that happen over the phone before you ever walk through the door. No one’s going to push you into an appointment you don’t need.

What to Do Before Your Wellness Visit
We suggest you plan out before you go to your visit. Most patients don’t come in with a plan. Some don’t even think about what they’re going to say while they are there. That’s okay. But taking 10 minutes the night before will make the visit twice as useful.
Make sure you are familiar with all of your medications, including over-the-counter vitamins, supplements and anything over-the-counter you might have. Having a list of your medications and bring them along can save time on that part of the process as well as help you remember all of them, because you would be surprised at how often that happens and how much it can complicate the process.
Consider any known medical conditions in your family. Did your dad get diabetes? Has a sibling ever been diagnosed with heart disease? Did someone get cancer? Knowing your family history can help inform the type of screening you receive. It does not have to be perfect. Even a vague recollection will suffice, and it can be beneficial to you down the road.
Jot down any symptoms or concerns you have been experiencing. Maybe your knee hurts when the humidity is too high here in Tampa during the summer. Maybe you’ve noticed a change in your energy level. Maybe there is a question you have regarding that mole on your back. Your wellness exam is the perfect place to address all of this, so no need to hold back.
- Your insurance card and valid driver’s license / state ID
- Any current lab results or previous healthcare providers' information
- A written list of questions or health concerns you want to bring to your doctor’s attention
- A complete list of active prescription drugs, OTC medications, and supplements
If you’re required to fast before the visit, we will know this ahead of time. Not all wellness exam screenings require you to fast, depending on what labs we are running. If you happen to forget to fast, there is still a lot that can be done and we’ll simply need to draw labs another day.
Wear a comfortable set of clothes and bring your questions written out. Loose sleeves will make the process of drawing blood and measuring your blood pressure easier. No need to dress up or put on a difficult to take off outfit, you’ll feel more comfortable and we’ll get more accurate readings from a relaxed patient!
One thing that many people forget about their questions. It can be difficult to remember what you wanted to ask right after the appointment is done, however, having them written down will help you remember!
